Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Nearly 30 Months

19 of Medvedev's 21 victories have been achieved on hard courts

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for nearly 30 months with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has had a challenging period, winning just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the US Open.

The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his service game in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with long-term coach Gilles Cervara.

Currently collaborating with his coach and his other coach, Medvedev has consistently advanced in the last few weeks - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over challenger Moutet.

This marks his maiden trophy since the Italian tournament and initial on a hardcourt since that period of the previous year.

The win also means Medvedev has won 21 titles at twenty-one different events.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a event with my both daughters simultaneously, so to get a title is especially meaningful," said world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my child my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my child her name was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his last six finals, featuring in Halle previously this season.

The player's defensive play style and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had caused some to wonder if his capacity to perform at the elite level was concluded.

Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and perform assertively, backed up by an improved serve.

The champion fought back from a break down in the initial set against the difficult Moutet, securing four of the last five points to gain the advantage.

Both players swapped service breaks in the second set before the challenger, bidding for his first ATP Tour championship, seized the initiative to push for a third set.

He rescued 4 initial chances in a tight third set before the Russian secured a break to that score to secure the win.

Appropriately, Medvedev clinched the title with a point at the net, with his opponent failing to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
