New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
